Eight-year-old Amber Thacker, from Century City in Cape Town, is officially the Toys R Us Toy Sprint 2018 champion with Nickelodeon, beating 11 other children from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

This week Nickelodeon contacted Amber’s father Michael Thacker, who decided to surprised Amber with a blue suitcase – pretending he had bought it for her, and wanted her to open it to check if it was big enough for their next travel. Much to her surprise, stuck inside the bag was a note featuring the Nickelodeon Toy Sprint logo written, “Pack your bags you’re heading to Hong Kong!”.

Tasania Parsadh, Channel Director for Nickelodeon Africa for Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa) commented: “This year’s Nickelodeon’s Toy Sprint brought to you by Toys R Us was a huge success with all 12 contestants walking away with fantastic toys of their choice after their sprints. Over 300 000 votes were cast this year by Nickelodeon friends, and Amber came up tops, bagging 50% of those votes. Thanks to our amazing partner Toys “R” Us for another successful year, and we look forward to hosting Amber Thacker in Hong Kong.

All participating children had to sprint through a Toys R Us store and show-off their snatching skills by grabbing all their favourite toys in 60. Following a challenge where she had to go head-to-head in an online video battle to win the grand prize, Amber came out on top with over 17 000 votes that were cast by Nickelodeon fans for their  Toy Sprint 2018 champion.

“I am so happy, it feels like Christmas came early,” said beaming Amber. “I thought I was very lucky, the first time around just getting to do Toy Sprint at Toys R Us. I cannot believe I get to be lucky again and the thought of visiting another country is so exciting.”

Next month, Amber will take part in the final five-minute Toy Sprint at Toys “R” Us Harbour City, in Hong Kong, where she will sprint to grab as many toys as she can fit in her trolley, to the maximum value of USD5000. This comes with an all-expenses paid trip to Hong Kong, including round trip airfare, a five-night stay at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers for the winner and three family members/friends, as well as USD1800 in spending money.

“We are thrilled to be able to announce our 2018 Toy Sprint winner and to continue to bring our Toys R Us customers dreams to life! We urge all our valued customers to look out for 2019 entries so they too can get the opportunity to sprint around their favourite Toys R Us store and get all the toys they could ever imagine. Children are at the forefront of our brand and we are delighted to be part of this exciting campaign which gets bigger and better each year,” said Nicole Annells, marketing manager Toys R Us & Babies R Us South Africa.
